TV3′S AFTERNOON SHOW Midday has been facing backlash today after viewers claimed the show was ‘skinny shaming’ Giuliana Rancic in a post on its Facebook page.
Rancic’s appearance has been the subject of intense scrutiny since she walked the red carpet at the Grammy Awards on Sunday.
Twitter users have been calling her “skin and bones” and “unhealthy”, and comparing her to more curvaceous stars like Nicki Minaj.
The headlines from the day after the Grammys reflected the comments on Twitter:
Rancic underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, and is currently in remission. Since then, Rancic’s body has often been the subject of scrutiny, prompting her to tell the Huffington Post in 2013:
No, it doesn’t bother me, honestly, it really doesn’t. You know, headlines sell and that’s fine… None of that stuff bothers me at all because I know the real story, I know who I am.
TV3′s Midday joined in on the discussion today on Facebook, posting a picture of Rancic at the Grammys with the caption:
Giuliana Rancic turns heads at the Grammys but not for the right reasons. What do you think of this picture?
However Facebook users immediately leapt to Rancic’s defence, admonishing Midday for inviting people to criticise the TV presenter’s body.
“Maybe stop judging women for being whatever size they are post-cancer treatment, Midday,” one wrote. “Perpetuating the physical judgement of women as usual!”
“Skinny shaming is just as bad as fat shaming and I’m disgusted you would put this picture up,” said another. “Who cares what she looks like? It’s her life, her body and it’s no one else’s business.”
Another user added:
What’s wrong with this is that a photo of a woman who is recovering from cancer is put up for everyone to give their nasty views… Until you have had cancer and know what chemo can do to a body, then you might understand why some are thin and can’t put on weight.
TV3 has been contacted for comment about the Facebook post.
